CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT: FROM TRADITIONAL METHODS TO MEDIATION

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the nature, causes, and specific features of conflicts in higher education institutions operating in the context of social transformations, digitalization, academic mobility, and the growing autonomy of learners. Traditional approaches to conflict resolution in universities are examined, including administrative, disciplinary, and pedagogical models of influence. Their advantages and limitations are identified, taking into account contemporary social, psychological, and organizational challenges. Although various aspects of mediation are actively explored in the works of domestic and international scholars, insufficient attention has been paid to the higher education environment, where the legal awareness and legal culture of young people are formed. For this reason, special attention is given to mediation as one of the most promising conflict management technologies, grounded in the values of dialogue, partnership, respect, and nonviolent communication. The types of conflicts that can be resolved through mediation in the educational process are identified. The article analyzes the potential for implementing mediation in higher education structures as a tool for preventing conflicts among students, faculty, and administrators. International experience of mediation centers in universities is summarized, and prospects for the development of this practice in Ukraine are outlined. The article also examines the current regulatory framework for mediation in Ukraine, identifies opportunities for integrating mediation into the system of educational governance, and presents conclusions regarding the adaptation of mediation tools to the Ukrainian higher education context. It is determined that there is currently no single recommended mechanism for implementing mediation tools in the educational process, and several stages of such activities are proposed. It is concluded that mediation contributes to the formation of a culture of trust, academic integrity, and partnership, which are essential for the modern university environment.
