COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CLASSICAL FOREIGN LITERARY WORKS AND THEIR FILM ADAPTATIONS AS A MEANS OF DEVELOPING READERS’ CRITICAL RECEPTION

This article explores the complex issue of film adaptation of classical foreign literary works from a comparative perspective, revealing both shared and divergent mechanisms in the transition from literary text to cinematic interpretation. The study focuses on adaptations of three conceptually distinct works: F. S. Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby , J. Austen’s Pride and Prejudice , and R. Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 . Theoretical frameworks (Hutcheon; Cartmell & Whelehan; Sanders) and Ukrainian scholarship on intermediality and postmodern reception (Pa vlyshyn; Tkachenko; Bondar - Tereshchenko) are reviewed. Methodologically, the study employs comparative, cultural, structural - symbolic, and hermeneutic approaches. The article demonstrates that film adaptation functions as an autonomous artistic form that both preserves the core meanings of the source text and transforms them into new aesthetic, ideological, and socio - cultural actualizations. Specific examples include the visualization of metaphors in Baz Luhrmann’s film, directorial intonation in Joe Wright ’s adaptation, and the modification of the dystopian narrative in interpretations by Truffaut and Bahrani. The study concludes that comparative research into adaptations enhances understanding of cultural transmission mechanisms and points to avenues for further interdisciplinary exploration.References
