Abstract

The article is devoted to highlighting female images in the novel “Solo for Solomiya” by Volodymyr Lys. The analysis of the characters is carried out through the prism of their value orientations, which are manifested both at the individual and social levels. The images of the main heroines are analyzed taking into account the ethno-regional characteristics of the Volyn region, from childhood to maturity. Solomiya is shown as a character of natural purity, distinguished by a special love for everything living, unique, and a desire to know the world. Her mercy, love and compassion always remain in the soul, are constant companions on the path of life. The originality of the heroine's relationship with Father Andronius, which were especially friendly, is emphasized, it is clarified that the sacrificial value orientations are determined by the ability to forgive and help one's neighbor. Solomia's adult life is characterized from the standpoint of her role as a wife, mistress and - later - mother. The heroine tries to fill her personal space with feminine happiness, and therefore realizes her sinfulness, because although she lives with Pavel, she loves Peter. Each of her subsequent loves is an attempt to achieve happiness as she feels it, as she dreams of it. Ultimately, the equality between the internal, spiritual, and mental with the external, physical, and interpersonal is outlined. Rufina is analyzed as an image of an antagonistic position. She, like Solomiya, is endowed with beauty, but constantly uses it, demanding constant attention, appropriate treatment and gifts. And Solomiya, whom everyone loved, is perceived not only as a friend, but also as a competitor, constantly trying to cause her grief. Rufina's ingratitude is clearly outlined: she did evil to Solomiya and Vasily, who saved her from death. Her relationships with men are mercantile, the woman constantly betrays them. The heroine feels her unfulfilled as a mother, which is why she decides to kidnap Solomiya's youngest daughter, but does not know how to deal with her. Her nature is selfish and even destructive.
